US-made steel bar is ‘one of the nicest pieces of metal I’ve ever seen’
Steel bars, which are a favorite for military use, are made from various kinds of steel.
They are also quite durable and have a long life, but they can have a hard time surviving in harsh weather.
Al Jazeera spoke to a veteran steel bar maker who said the steel bar was the nichest piece of metal he has ever seen.
“This steel bar in my shop is a World War II steel bar that has been in my workshop for over 50 years,” said the veteran steel worker, who did not want to be identified for fear of reprisal.
“I can’t think of any other steel bar like this in my lifetime.
It’s a beautiful piece of steel, and you can tell the war effort went into it.”
But he added that it was difficult to make a living with it, saying: “It’s a hard job, but it’s very rewarding.”
The US military used steel bars for its armoured vehicles during the Korean War and later during the Vietnam War.
They were used to make heavy weapons and ammunition, including grenades, bullets, bombs, torpedoes and rocket pods.
The metal is then transported to the US for manufacturing and then used in military aircraft.
It is then shipped to Europe for export.
But the US military has now moved its use of steel bars to a new era.
“The military has shifted to using new, more environmentally friendly materials to make new items,” said John Travolta, a senior adviser to the Steel Industry Association of America.
“It has made steel bars more sustainable, less damaging to the environment and has provided a new source of revenue for the military.”
He added: “The US military is still using steel bars, but now they’re not doing it for the same reasons they used to.”
The Steel Industry Alliance estimates the US consumes more than 4 billion metric tons of steel annually.
In a study released earlier this year, it said steel bars account for up to a third of all US steel exports, a significant part of which is exported to countries including Australia, Brazil, Germany, Israel and the Philippines.
But in 2015, a report by the Department of Energy (DOE) estimated the total amount of steel produced in the US was more than 7 billion metric tonnes.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates the total value of US steel products exported is $1.7 trillion.
“We have a big challenge in our industry,” said Dave Smith, president of the Steel Institute of America, an industry group.

Aluminum is a popular additive for building materials and is being used to strengthen military tanks and aircrafts.
But Smith said aluminum was not the only steel being used in the military.
“If you look at the military procurement process and you compare it to what’s going on in the steel industry, the military is a very large part of that,” he said.
“There are billions and billions of dollars worth of military goods coming into the US each year, and if you’re going to use steel in a military project you’re not going to get away with it.”
Smith added that he was worried that the military might be using aluminum in a more dangerous way than other steel industries.
“Why would you use aluminum in the way that it’s used in other industries?” he said, adding that aluminum was being used as a fire retardant, to make buildings more resistant to earthquakes.
“These are chemicals that are being used by the military for purposes other than what they were intended to do.”
US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said in a statement that “the Department of Defense is committed to maintaining and enhancing its strategic relationships with the global steel industry”.
He said the military would “continue to work closely with our global partners, and engage in ongoing dialogue to explore alternative energy and technology opportunities for steel, aluminium and other materials.”
But Smith noted that aluminum is used in building materials such as military vehicles, warships and submarines.
“In the future, aluminium will become a part of many different aerospace applications and it could very well be the case that aluminum could even be used to build a nuclear submarine,” he added.
Smith said that aluminum would be used as an additive in aerospace manufacturing, but he added: “[It’s] not a very big deal, and aluminium is very inexpensive.
You can buy a kilogram of aluminum for $15 and you could probably make the same thing for $10,000.”
Smith said it was important to remember that the US does not manufacture most of its steel at its own factories.
Instead, it imports from other countries and “bonds” it to US companies in order to reduce its tariffs.
